Marathon runners on their marks for charity
With the London Marathon just ten days away, the community’s athletes are raring to go as they get set to raise thousands of pounds for Jewish charities and organsations.
Jewish Care’s marathon team were given some top training tips from Commonwealth athlete Darren St. Clair. Their team include Richard Bernstein and Darren Brown, both of whom have grandmothers who are residents at Jewish Care’s Vi & John Rubens home in Ilford. Other runners include Perry Kissin and Matt Conway, while Darren Brown will be running his second marathon.
Barbara Goldberg is running for her mother who was a member of Jewish Care’s Maurice and Vivienne Wohl Community Centre in Golders Green. She said: “To run for Jewish Care means a lot to me as it’s a fantastic charity and I’ve seen first hand the amazing work they do for older relatives at Vi & John Rubens house.”
Jewish Care’s Director of Fundraising and Marketing, Daniel Carmel-Brown said: “We’re delighted that Darren has supported our runners. Rabbi Eli Magzimof has had a busy few months. In addition to being the Chaplain to more than 1,500 Jewish students in Leeds and Yorkshire, he’s also taken it upon himself to take part to raise vital funds for University Jewish Chaplaincy.
He said: “I want to raise awareness amongst both my own students – my wife and I have a close relationship with hundreds of students in Leeds, Sheffield, Bradford and elsewhere in Yorkshire – and in the wider community to just how integral University Jewish Chaplaincy is to the development of Jewish students.”
The 29-year-old, who was a Paratrooper in the IDF, fits in three running sessions a week around his daily role and has now been labelled as the ‘Running Rabbi’ by students who he runs past while pounding the local streets. “I hope that they will try and support, in whatever way they can, my marathon effort,” he says. Daniel Bratt will be foregoing any birthday celebrations to take part in the race for World Jewish Relief. The 22-year-old injured his leg in February, which forced him out-of-action for a few weeks and of the Silverstone half marathon. However, back on track for his first marathon, he says: “What drew me to World Jewish Relief was not only the work they do for Jews in the Ukraine and former Soviet Union, but being at the forefront of the Jewish response to humanitarian crises.” You can sponsor Daniel at: http//www.mywjr.org.uk/danielsmarathon/
