Over 450 students attend newly-created shabbat meals in one month
Over 450 students have attended shabbat meals in the London, just a month after being formally set up.
In response to growing demand from hungry Jewish students, shabbat dinners were organised, and run by a London JSoc Shabbat committee.
With support from Chaplaincy and the Union of Jewish Students, so far, they have been held at Western Marble Arch and Central Synagogues offering a full meal for just £5.
Dina Hochhauser, who is leading the London JSoc Shabbat committee, said that the dinners are “an incredibly important initiative, bringing together students from all the London campuses and from completely different backgrounds.
The dinners have had a great atmosphere and I have so enjoyed meeting new people each week.”
In addition to offering students a hearty meal and a good time, they have also featured special guests, such as celebrity Judge Robert Rinder. During ShabbatUK, over 200 students came together.
London Region Chaplain, Rabbi Gavin Broder said, “I am absolutely delighted to see that we are meeting the needs of Jewish students living in central London and supporting them by providing regular weekly Friday night dinners.
The dinners ensure that students from University campuses across London are able to have a traditional Friday night dinner in a warm and friendly atmosphere. I look forward to seeing many long term relationships being formed at these evenings.”
Weekly dinners will continue throughout the year and will feature a variety of interesting speakers, as well as themed dinners.
