Peer beaten in US Open first qualifying round
Shahar Peer’s hopes of qualifying for the first round of the US Open were ended at the first qualifying stage.
Up against Austrian Tamira Paszek, the Israeli was comprehensively beaten 6-2, 6-3. Her defeat came after Julia Glushko exit from the qualifiers, after she was beaten 4-6, 6-3, 1-6 by American Julia Boserup
Amir Weintraub fared little better in the men’s competition, though he did at least take his first qualifying round to a third and final set, but was ultimately beaten 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 by Brazilian Guilherme Clezar.
Their defeats mean Dudi Sela will be Israel’s sole representative in the singles at Flushing Meadows, while Jonathan Erlich, who reached the semi-finals at Wimbledon in June, will be competing in the doubles.
Also in qualifying action is Noah Rubin, who won the Wimbledon junior title in 2014. He’s through to the third round, where he will face the number three seed, Argentine Guido Pella, who is also the 91st ranked player in the world. He beat Liang-Chi Huang from Chinese Taipei, 6-2, 7-5, in Wednesday’s second round win.
The tournament gets underway on Monday.
