It may have taken them 120 minutes, but the Raiders enjoyed an ultimately comfortable passage into the next round of the competition.

Liron Mannie helped himself to a couple of goals, with Josh Green and Ben Joseph also on target.

Raiders manager Rob Richman told jewishnews.co.uk: ” We are very pleased to see off a spirited South Manchester side and progress to the last eight of the PM cup.

“We were sluggish in the opening twenty minutes and were fortunate not to go a goal down when Lavin missed two very good opportunities. From then though we stepped things up and dominated proceedings. I’m not quite sure how we didn’t score in the second half but full credit to South Manchester who did absolutely everything to take the game into extra-time.

“We were always confident that we’d get the goal we needed in the extra half an hour of extra time. In the end we got four, three in the first fifteen minutes. The first scored by Mannie after just a minute of extra time knocked the stuffing out of South Manchester and from there our superior fitness told. We wish Neil, Toby and the rest of South Manchester well. They played their part in a great cup game. For us the focus now turns back to the league with three massive games coming up in the next three weeks.”

Leeds ensured it wasn’t a wasted trip down South as they came away from Essex with this impressive win.

Hendon spurned the chance to go top of the table as they were held to a draw in an enthralling match at Rowley Lane.

Daniel Green gave Harmen a half-time lead, though Greg Corin lashed in Hendon’s equaliser, before they set siege on Harmen’s goal only to be continually thwarted by Max Shields in the Harmen goal. 

Hendon manager David Garbacz told jewishnews.co.uk: “We had earmarked this match as a really big one before kick-off and so it proved. We started slowly on a difficult pitch and found ourselves trailing to one of their dangerous set pieces at half-time. We have been in that position many times before this season and have put in some great second half performances so we knew not to panic. After equalising early in the second half, we looked for all money like we would go on to get the win but chance after chance was thwarted by their superb keeper who had an absolute blinder. Sometimes I would be unhappy with my forwards for not taking chances but they did nothing wrong – they just came up against a brick wall.

“Harmen still posed a danger on the break and missed one or chances themselves but overall we did come off disappointed. Spirit wise and energy wise though I was delighted with our second half performance if not the ultimate result. The pitch was tricky, but definitely playable and the referee did well to get the game on and then let it flow as much as possible. Harmen are a good team – they possess strong talented players plus one or two of my old Neasden mates on the sidelines which is always entertaining and credit to them for their contribution to an enthralling game . When the prizes are dished out in May this could prove not to be too bad a point after all. Over the course of a season you can’t win every game and we accept the draw here as an overall fair result and move on.”

Harmen manager Joel Alterman told jewishnews.co.uk: “We knew that Hendon would give us a stern test yesterday and although we looked strong throughout, our goalkeeper Max Shields had to be at his best, pulling out some world class saves to keep Hendon at bay.

“We knew what was to come from Hendon in the second half as they turned up the tempo and as the half progressed, once they equalised, both sides looked to find the net again but the chances fell Hendon’s way. Max Shields, undoubtedly his best performance of the season, pulled off a string of top quality saves to keep the scores level while at the other end the crossbar was rattled and chances seemed to slide agonisingly past both posts.

“Both sides played very well and a draw looked a fair result. A point against Hendon can never be sniffed at although this game could have gone either way at the end.”

Not much to report here, as a rare goalless match was played out between two mid-table sides.

Lions manager Jamie Kyte told jewishnews.co.uk: “I wasn’t there for 80 mins so no idea how the game panned out. On the plus side we kept a clean sheet for the first time this season which was very pleasing.”

Faithfold player-manager Zuriel Solomon told jewishnews.co.uk: “It was a game of missed chances for both teams. We had a couple of good chances but just lacked a bit of composure in the final third. A draw was a fair result in the end.”

Storm moved up into joint-fourth as they turned in a professional performance against rock-bottom Brixton.

NORSTAR LONDON RAIDERS B 3 BRADY MACCABI 3
Raiders were unable to open up a three-point gap at the top of the table as they were held to a frustrating point by a battling Brady side.

Reiss Mogilner scored a hat-trick for Brady, with player-manager Josh Dagul telling jewishnews.co.uk: “I believe our performance was good and there was room to score more goals with the chances we created. Overall what you want first is the quality of the performance and to get a result. When you play away from home and are 2-0 down after 10 minutes, it would be easy to drop our heads and accept defeat but we showed great character to come back to 2-2, despite going on to concede one more before half-time. 

“In the second half we were excellent from 1 to 11. Sam Singer made one fantastic save from Jake Gilbert but apart from that we limited them completely in the second half. It was just a shame that we couldn’t grab a winner in the last 10 minutes after equalising, despite creating 4 very good chances.”

Game of the day saw ten-man Mill Hill move to within three points off top spot as they fought back from 5-3 down to win this 11-goal thriller.

Darren Bloom put them ahead in the tenth minute, and ten minutes later, Jason Shoffman doubled their advantage. Jewdinese pulled one back, before Ben Zloof seemingly put them in control.

However, they soon found themselves 5-3 down – and a man down when Jamie Kent saw red for lashing out, but Zloof pulled one back wit h a 30-yard free-kick, before Shoffman claimed his second to make it 5-5. But piling on the pressure, three consecutive corners eventually resulted in a scramble in the box being slid in by Ben Grabiner.

Mill Hill manager Daniel Beresford told jewishnews.co.uk: “After last week I didn’t think it could be possible to be involved in another game like that. Having turned up and the pitch being frozen they didn’t look like they wanted to play so we knew we had to get at them early. Pulling it back to 5-5, I would have been happy with a point, but the character we showed was unbelievable.”

Zack Collins scored four of Mill Hill’s goals, with Zac Brin hitting their fifth – albeit to no avail.

Norstar are up into fourth spot as goals from Josh Bloom, Will Ufland, Liam Stein and Oli Nathan saw them to this comfortable win.

Manager Zack Gothelf told jewishnews.co.uk: “Although we took a while to break down Catford, we thoroughly deserved the victory, with goals split between the players and a clean sheet on top. A very good day at the office for NLR C.

FAITHFOLD B 2 LONDON ROVERS 4
Rovers extended their lead at the top of the table to ten points as a hat-trick from Avi Markiewicz helped them off fellow title challengers Faithfold.

Josh Bharier hit their fourth goal, with manager Jeremy Brown telling jewishnews.co.uk: “I’m obviously delighted with the result and the all-round performance, but the boys do like to give me a fright every now and then. We were 3-0 up with 15 minutes to go, they got two back but then Avi pops up with his hat-trick and seals the points. Winning these two massive games back-to-back is a great achievement and the boys deserve all the credit.”

Faithfold manager Rob Shooman told jewishnews.co.uk: “We lost to the probable winners of the third division. They played well today, were very organised, very committed and took their chances well . We also had a lot of the game creating good chances but if you don’t convert the opportunities you create , you don’t score goals, that was our problem.

“1-0 down at half-time was a little misleading as we had most of the game, but we were not too concerned. Two quick goals soon after the start of the second half knocked the stuffing out of us a little and we were creaking, but my boys rallied superbly bringing the score back to 3-2. It was their time to be a little creaky, but as sometimes happens the team pushing for that late goal leaves themselves open to a breakaway and that’s what happened with a few minutes to go, their breakaway goal sealed the match for them and you could feel the relief in their players and management.

“My boys did not play as well as they could but all respect to London Rovers , we had a good game of football and they deserved to edge it in the end to win it.”
