Nine-man Wingate lose to Kingstonian

Kingstonian laboured to a 1-0 win against nine-man Wingate and Finchley, as most of the match was a Ryan Moss / Bobby Smith show, with Wingate’s keeper regularly thwarting the striker, writes Paul Lerner.

Wingate started the brighter as Spencer McCall fired an early shot which was deflected wide. However, Kingstonian scored in only the third minute as Ryan Moss received a long clearance from a Wingate corner, and slotted past Bobby Smith with a left footed strike.

The match was still end to end with Wingate’s Sogbanmu missing a volley from close range, and a Moss header was parried by Smith. However the game was changed in the 25th minute when Bobby Aisien was adjudged to have made a professional foul outside the area, although there appeared to be covering defenders.

Wingate were riled by this, but comfortably saw out the first half. The second red card followed as the players headed for the tunnel, with Ahmet Rifat being sent off for two acts of dissent.

Kingstonian were clearly low on confidence following a recent poor run, and were lacklustre when they really could have put the visitors to the sword. Moss should have scored when he was played through in the box but he was charged down by Smith. He then skimmed a header beyond the far post, and then hit the bar with a volley.

However, for most of the half Wingate’s side defended resolutely and were organised at the back looking to hit Kingstonian on the counter. Substitutes Hector Morante and Anton Olondo both tried to upset the odds with shots from the edge of the area but missed the target. The home side were getting nervous from not scoring a second goal, and Aaron Goode had a shot which Smith parried the ball away at the near post.

With a few minutes remaining Smith was left exposed and brought down a forward inside the box. Andre McCollin hit the post from the penalty, in a moment which epitomised the match, though it mattered little as the referee soon brought proceedings to a close.
