£50 silver Torah finials sell for whopping £18,500 at auction

This pair of silver Torah finials, estimated to sell for £50, have gone under the hammer at a Surrey auction house for a whopping £18,500.

A pair of silver Torah finials estimated to sell for £50 have gone under the hammer at a Surrey auction house for a whopping £18,500, writes Raine Marcus.

Lot 60 was part of a large collection of Judaica for sale which included such modern and antique silver items as mezuzas, kiddush cups, menorahs, candelabras, havdalah spice towers, challah knives, Russian silver and more.

Most lots sold for more than the estimated valuation to bidders both online and in the Guildford salesroom.

Wellers Auctions refused to release information on the sale, saying they wished to safeguard vendor and buyer privacy. But the finials are believed to have been sold to a private buyer, whose identity was kept confidential.

The collection of Judaica up for sale was also believed to have belonged to a private vendor.
