Abbott STILL silent – four days after Hackney Labour rejects antisemitism claims
Jewish News has made five attempts to get clarification from Abbott about her stance on the Hackney North and Stoke Newington Constituency Labour Party motion.
Shadow home secretary Diane Abbott has remained conspicuously silent about a motion passed by her local Labour group rejecting claims of institutional antisemitism in the party, despite mounting pressure on her to make her position known.
The motion was passed by Hackney North and Stoke Newington Constituency Labour Party by 45 votes to 35, with 14 abstentions on Thursday, received widespread criticism.
According to several unconfirmed reports, Abbott attended the meeting and failed to challenge members. Abbott has remained silent since the meeting, despite calls for her to condemn the motion.
Jewish News has made five attempts to obtain clarification from Abbott about her stance on the motion.
On Friday, a member of Abbott’s office said the shadow home secretary was unavailable for comment due to constituency commitments. When approached again on Monday, Abbott’s office failed to reply and has yet to issue a statement.
A Labour Party source said: “CLPs are not involved in individual disciplinary cases and can’t influence them, which would be entirely inappropriate.
“Rather than looking inwards and fueling internal divisions, we should be focusing on campaigning, developing our hugely popular manifesto and working together to fight the Tories.
