Wit, humour and cleverness in Alexander S. Bermange’s cabaret show

He Left Me For My Granny and I Fell in Love with a Sheep might sound like recent episodes from The Jeremy Kyle Show, but they are in fact the comic creations of musician Alexander S. Bermange, writes Amy Hirst.

The comic songwriter, who regularly performs on Radio 4’s Broadcasting House and the BBC World Service’s Weekend, is gearing up for his cabaret show at The Crazy Coqs, next week.

Trainspotters, perverted pensioners and David Beckham are just some of the major topics of his compositions, which he says are influenced by “public figures, everyday annoyances and the more eccentric characters in society”.

Bermange, who grew up in Radlett and attended Haberdashers’ Aske’s Boys’ School in Elstree, will perform alongside five special guests, whom he describes as the “most exciting leading ladies in musical theatre at present”.

They include Aimie Atkinson (Carnaby Street, Dirty Dancing), Rebecca Trehearn (Ghost, Dirty Dancing, We Will Rock You), Helena Blackman (Seven Brides For Seven Brothers), Sarah Earnshaw (Spamalot) and Ashleigh Gray (Cool Rider, Wicked).

He believes his songs exercise “wit, humour and cleverness in equal measures” and suggests they are suitable for anyone who wants to “laugh at the expense of others – but all in good taste”.
