Swastika and words ‘kill Jews’ daubed in toilet at north London private girls’ school

Students at a north London girls’ private school have been left “deeply saddened” after antisemitic graffiti was daubed in a bathroom.

Jewish News understands a Nazi swastika sign and the words “kill Jews” were daubed in toilet at the  £24,000-a-year Channing School in Highgate.

In a statement the school confirmed they had discovered the antisemitic graffiti in one of the student toilets at lunchtime on Thursday 2 November.

The school also confirmed that the have reported the incident both to the police and to the Community Security Trust.

In the statement they added: “We acted swiftly to close off the toilet to students and remove the graffiti as soon as we became aware of it.

“Unfortunately, a number of students saw what had been written and they, and their families, have been understandably shocked and upset.

“We have reassured them that it is being dealt with and reminded them and the rest of the community of the places and people to which they can go for support. Our pastoral team has already reached out to several individuals to provide support.”

Headmistress Lindsey Hughes sent a letter to parents which said:’I know [some students] are already devastated about something like this happening in our school community – as am I.

“I will be speaking to the whole school tomorrow morning to reiterate unequivocally that antisemitism is abhorrent, unacceptable and will not be tolerated.

“It has no place in our school and I am personally horrified that any student should have expressed such a view, and in this way.

“While we are unable to identify the author of this graffiti, I will make clear that I expect them to contemplate their actions and urge them to come clean about their involvement.

“I have no doubt that you will share my outrage and unhappiness at this situation and please rest assured that every adult in the school community will be working to ensure that this cannot happen again.”

CST said is was “aware of the incident of antisemitic graffiti at Channing School. We are in touch with parents and are providing support.

“There can be no place for antisemitism in any school and Jewish students deserve full support and safeguarding.”
