Auschwitz museum records 1.5 million visitors for 2014

A record 1.5 million people visited Nazi death camp Auschwitz-Birkenau in 2014, according to the site museum.

Figures show that almost 400,000 visitors were from Poland and almost 200,000 people came from Britain. Tourists from the US, Italy, Germany and Israel also registered in large numbers.

The museum further added that 70 percent of visitors were under the age of 18 years, while 10,000 people came to attend seminars, conferences or study visits.

Located in the southern Polish town of Oswiecim, over 1 million people were systematically murdered at the sprawling site until it was finally liberated.

“It has become the world’s symbol of the Holocaust and the crimes of WWII,” said Dr. Piotr Cywinski, the director of the Auschwitz Memorial. “Without the reference to the history of this place it would be hard for new generations to understand.”
