Beitar charged by UEFA over fans’ racist chants

UEFA have charged both Beitar Jerusalem and Charleroi over racist incidents from both sets of fans which marred last week’s Europa League second qualifying round match.

The Israelis were charged with racist behaviour (banners and chants), over the improper conduct of supporters (breaking down fences), setting off and throwing of fireworks and objects, for the display of an illicit banner and improper conduct of the team (five cards or more).

The Belgians, who won the first leg match 5-1, helped in no small part to Beitar being reduced to nine players, were charged with racist behaviour (gestures), over fans setting off & throwing of fireworks and objects and insufficient organisation (segregation of spectators).

The case will be dealt with the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body later on today, ahead of tonight’s second leg in Jerusalem.

Meanwhile, one of Beitar’s main sponsors, investment house iTrader, canceled its contract with the club on Wednesday.
