Board issues ’10 commitments’ manifesto

Jewish community leaders issued parliamentary candidates with their “10 commitments” ahead of next year’s general election, outlining the expectations of policymakers.

Launched just before party conference season, the 40-page ‘Jewish Manifesto’ is being sent to election hopefuls up and down the country, as the UK gears up to vote in May next year.

Community leaders say the manifesto is the culmination of six months’ consultation and seeks to “protect and promote key aspects of Jewish life in Britain”.

Common concerns, such as religious freedoms, education and social care, are all covered, as is Israel, anti-Semitism and social action.

Under-fire Board of Deputies President Vivian Wineman said the document was “an example of how we utilise the expertise of our representatives,” while Board chief executive Gillian Merron said it “reflects the diversity of the community”.

The initiative is a direct follow-on from the Jewish Manifesto produced for the European elections earlier this year, and parliamentary candidates were urged to use the UK version at hustings and in letters, meetings and public debates.

“Don’t be shy to challenge candidates on particular policies,” said Wineman. “Ask them whether they will support the key commitments set out in the document.

One of the first opportunities to do so will come at Limmud Conference in December, at which several candidates will speak.
