Bristol Jewish students branded ‘dirty filthy Zios’ during Corbyn protest
Young activists held placards accusing the Labour leader of 'loving terrorists' and were met with verbal abuse and insults
Jewish students at the University of Bristol say they were verbally abused while holding placards accusing Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn of being “racist” and “loving terrorists” during a Labour rally in the city.
The incident took place at College Green on Monday with Jewish protesters alleging that they were called “filthy Zionists” and asked: “Who funds you?”
Chloe, a third-year Jewish politics student, told the local Epigram newspaper that “someone just screamed at me ‘you dirty, filthy Zio’… I was also called a puppet of the Zionist lobby”.
It is the latest political skirmish involving Jewish students there – in September the University caused anger after rejecting a complaint about a lecturer who taught that parts of the Zionist lobby funds Islamophobia.
Jewish students said their concerns about David Miller, a sociology professor, who told undergraduates about “ultra-Zionist funders,” were not being taken seriously.
Opinion seems divided in city, however. Last week Sage Brice, a Jewish doctoral researcher at the University, defended Corbyn’s Labour as “part of a growing alternative Jewish community here in Bristol, drawing inspiration from a diverse and radical Jewish heritage”.
