Burnham’s braced for third pro fight

Bushey-based boxer set for York Hall showdown on Saturday night.

Burnham will be looking for his third professional victory at the weekend

Josh Burnham insists he won’t be fazed when he takes on a far more experienced boxer in what will be his third professional fight at the weekend.

Facing fellow Brit Sonny Whiting in a scheduled six-round contest at York Hall, the 24-year-old middleweight will be coming up against an opponent who, in comparison, will be competing in his 27th fight.

But saying he’s the kind of fighter he wants to face, Burnham said: “He’s a good level opponent for this stage in my career, he’s coming to have a go and that’s what I want. He’s got the experience, but I’ve been sparring with world class fighters in the build-up, so I’m not too fazed by that.”

Fighting for the first time under his new coach, he said: “I’ve been training with him for the past few months and I’ve enjoyed all the new training techniques I’ve been doing. Preparations have gone really well and I’m excited to see it all come together on fight night.

“It’s all about getting the experience at the moment, it’s good to get the rounds in and would also be nice to get a stoppage. But I think most importantly it’s about me and Don Charles getting accustomed to each other in the corner.”

Hoping Saturday night will be the next step for him in reaching his ultimate goal – winning a British title, he added: “That would be a huge deal for me! Depending on how the next year of my career goes, I don’t see why I can’t challenge for it in 2018. Every fight is important on route to the title, a loss can set you back massively, but losing never really enters my head!”
