Cambridge University adopts international definition of antisemitism

Union of Jewish Students welcomed the move which 'will go a long way in ensuring Jewish students are safeguarded from antisemitism on their campus'

Cambridge has become the latest university to adopt the international definition of antisemitism.

The IHRA definition was formally adopted after it was agreed at a meeting of the University of Cambridge’s General Board last week. The news comes after Education Secretary Gavin Williamson warned that universities could face cuts if they refuse to adopt the international definition before Christmas.

Cambridge University Jewish Society (CUJS), the representative body for Jewish students at Cambridge, have said they fully support the university’s decision to adopt the definition, along with all eleven of its specified examples, after the university previously claimed any behaviour that falls under the IHRA definition was already covered by “current Rules of Behaviour”.

Cambridge University Jewish Society said: “We trust that this announcement endows colleges, faculties and departments with the clarity and confidence to take robust action to safeguard Jewish students and we will seek further details on how this decision will be implemented.

“No Jewish student or member of staff should face the degrading indignity of antisemitism, be it through coded tropes or explicit abuse. 00CUJS will work with allies across the collegiate university and beyond to challenge prejudice, support victims and fearlessly advocate on their behalf.”

However, Cambridge Student Union are yet to adopt the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance definition of antisemitism, and CUJS are now calling on them to follow suit.

The Union of Jewish Students added: “We are pleased that the University of Cambridge has adopted the IHRA definition of antisemitism. We want to thank all those involved who have been instrumental in achieving this step.

“The adoption of the IHRA definition will go a long way in ensuring Jewish students are safeguarded from antisemitism on their campus. We will continue our work in ensuring all Student Unions and Universities in the UK adopt this vital and comprehensive definition.”
