Camila Giorgi into second round at US Open

Camilia Giorgi needed just over an hour to book her place in the second round of the US Open on Monday evening.

Up against the former junior world number one, the 26-year-old Italian beat the reigning United States Tennis Association (USTA) U18 girl’s national champion, Whitney Osuigwe, 6-4, 6-1.

Reaching the second round for the first time since 2015 – her best ever showing at Flushing Meadows was in reaching the fourth round in 2013 – she next faces the 16th seed, Venus Williams.

Later on Tuesday, Israel’s sole singles representative, Julia Glushko, will play her first round clash against Romanian Monica Niculescu. Ranked 162 in the world, the Ukrainian-born 28-year-old battled her way past three qualifying matches to book her place in the main round draw for the first time since 2014. Her best showing was a year earlier when she reached the third round.

Also in action is Argentine Diego Schwartzman, who takes on compatriot, Federico Delbonis, while American Noah Rubin faces Russian Mikhail Kukushkin.

With Dudi Sela ruled out through injury, Israel’s other representative is Jonathan Erlich. Teaming up with Pakistan’s Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi, they take on American duo Austin Krajicek and Tennys Sandgren in the first round of the men’s doubles.
