Camila Giorgi through to second round at Australian Open
Italian claims comfortable win, but there are defeats for two other Jewish players, Madeline Brengle and Peter Polansky
Camila Giorgi booked her place in the second round of the Australian Open on Tuesday morning with a comfortable win over Anna Kalinskaya.
Securing a 6-4, 6-3 win over the Russian qualifier, the 26-year-old, who’s ranked 78 in the world, next faces either Australian Ashleigh Barty or Belarussian Aryna Sabalenka.
Elsewhere, American Madeline Brengle, who’s ranked 83 in the world, was beaten in just over an hour, losing 6-3, 6-1 to GB’s Johanna Konta, while Canadian Peter Polansky, who battled his way past three rounds of qualifiers to reach the main round, was beaten in straight sets by Russian Karen Khachanov 7-6, 7-6, 6-4.
Israeli and Jewish interest on Wednesday will see Dudi Sela get his doubles campaign underway. Teaming up with Italian Thomas Fabbiano, they take on Belarussian Max Mirnyi and Austrian Philipp Oswald, while elsewhere in the competition, Israel’s other senior player Jonathan Erlich is teaming up with Candian Daniel Nestor, they meet Moldovan Radu Albot and South Korean Hyeon Chung.
Diego Schwartzman continues his singles campaign, when he takes on Norwegian Casper Ruud.
