A petition launched to protect religious slaughter in the UK is now the most signed campaign on the Government’s e-petitions website.

The petition states that “the Government should continue to protect the right to non-stun religious slaughter in the UK” for Jews and Muslims, and is addressed to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

The list of signatories currently stands at more than 134,000. A rival petition opposing religious slaughter has less than 120,000.

On receiving 10,000 signatures, the relevant department responded to the petition backing religious slaughter, stating: “The Prime Minister has confirmed that that there would be no ban on religious slaughter in the UK.”

On reaching 100,000 signatures petitions become eligible for consideration for debate by the Backbench Business Committee in Parliament.

Both petitions close on 30 March.
