Celtic fined over Palestinian flags

UEFA fine Scottish club 10,000 euros after supporters waved flags during Champions League tie against Israeli champions.

European football’s governing body UEFA has fined Scottish side Celtic 10,000 euros after their supporters displayed Palestinian flags during their Champions League match against Israeli side Hapoel Be’erSheba last month.

The actions drew a charge from UEFA, who viewed them as “illicit banners.” UEFA ruled forbids the use of ‘gestures, words, objects or any other means to transmit any message that is not fit for a sports event, particularly messages that are of a political, ideological, religious, offensive or provocative nature’.

Celtic have been punished eight times in five seasons for supporter misconduct, and were fined approximately £16,000 two years ago after a Palestine flag was displayed at a Champions League qualifier against KR Reykjavik.
