Chair of north London Tory association resigns over Nazi photo

The chairman of Enfield Conservative Association has resigned from the party saying he is “deeply sorry” after Jewish News revealed a photograph of him wearing full German Nazi uniform.

Colin Davis, who specialises in military law, said he was “ashamed” for dressing up in “bad taste fancy dress” in a photograph taken in the garden of a property in north London in the 1980s.

Earlier this week he was suspended by Enfield Southgate Conservatives, but insisted he had “no recollection” of the photograph.

Davis had been pencilled in as a candidate in the local Oakwood ward for next month’s elections, but his name was taken off the list after he contracted Covid.

In a statement to Jewish News Davis claimed: “I did not have sight of and had forgotten the old photo which I have now been able to identify.

“I am deeply embarrassed and ashamed my youthful self thought it appropriate to wear such garb even for a bad taste fancy dress. I can only apologise to all affected by my stupid actions of over forty years ago.

“I had completely forgotten the event and am deeply sorry to have caused embarrassment to others.

“I am resigning from the Conservative Party forthwith.”

Jewish News had forwarded the photograph to Davis ahead of running our story on first story on the photograph.

Asked about the photograph on Monday he had said:”“I have no recollection of this at all. Yes, there were various wild parties, very perverse themes expressed… I can’t absolutely rule it out.”

Enfield Southgate Conservatives immediately removed profiles of Davis from their website.

On it the Tory association had said Davis was ‘busy running popular campaigns of national relevance and starting to campaign for the May 2022 local elections.’
