Charity basketball tournament raises thousands in cancer victim’s memory

A basketball tournament launched to honour the memory of a cancer victim has raised over £7,500 for charities helping those suffering from the illness.

The inaugural George Goldstone Charity tournament (GG3v3) raised funds for Chai Cancer Care and Macmillan Cancer Support earlier in September.

The competition, held in memory of George Goldstone who died in July 2016 aged just 32-years-old, saw 21 teams of three battle it out for the inaugural title at JFS school.

Family and friends of George, as well as volunteers and spectators, watched as team ‘Omer Haim’ lifted the title, with all 77 players helping to raise money for the charities on the day.

George died a year after getting married to wife Lauren, and was an avid follower of the sport. His keen interest led Martin Dyan, creator of the tournament and a close friend, to set up the league in his memory.

Speaking to Jewish News, he said of the fundraising event: “It took almost a year planning the GG3v3 and I’d like to think George would have been really proud of what we all achieved.

“I’m so happy and thankful that we raised this much money for two great charities, all in honour of George.”

Martin played basketball with George from the age of 12, and added that he was delighted by the turnout: “I can’t thank enough the volunteers and all those who competed, through to the friends, family and businesses that sponsored and gave their time and effort to help put it together.”

George’s mum Jennie Goldstone previously spoke of her appreciation to those who have helped the charity, saying: “I can’t think of a better tribute for Aish to perpetuate George’s memory. Basketball and Jewish life was his passion.”
