Chief Rabbi gifts Prince William inscribed kippah
Jewish leader speaks of his 'honour' at joining the Duke of Cambridge at Yad Vashem, and reveals the inscription on the head covering given to the prince
Chief Rabbi Mirvis has spoken of his honour at accompanying Prince William at Yad Vashem during his historic visit to the Jewish state, while revealing what was inscribed on a kippah he gifted to the Royal.
The Jewish leader joined the Duke of Cambridge to Yad Vashem, Israel’s national Holocaust memorial museum, where chanted the El Maleh Rachamim memorial prayer for the six million Jewish victims of the Shoah. Rabbi Mirvis also accompanied the Duke in the Hall of Names.
He said: “Today’s visit to Yad Vashem was profoundly moving and deeply inspiring. The Duke of Cambridge is a figurehead for a younger generation and he has previously mentioned to me that he feels a particular responsibility to ensure that the lessons of the Holocaust are learned. As the generation of survivors sadly dwindles, there can be no more powerful indication of our commitment to protecting their legacy than the presence of the future Monarch at Yad Vashem.”
Chief Rabbi Mirvis also gifted the duke a kippah which is inscribed as follows: “Let us go up to the House of the God of Jacob. For the Torah shall come forth from Zion and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.” (Isaiah 2:3)
