Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis said it was “an honour” to participate in an historic interfaith iftar, the meal to break the fast during Ramadan.

He attended the Tuesday night event with London Mayor Sadiq Khan and Cardinal Vincent Nichols of the Diocese of Westminster, whose home provided the setting.

The Mayor of London took to Facebook, writing: “Here in London, we don’t just tolerate our diversity, we respect and celebrate it. Tonight we held the first ever #InterfaithIftar at the heart of the Catholic church, the home of Cardinal Vincent Nichols. Thank you to everyone who joined us for an inspiring evening with the Chief Rabbi, and young people from different faiths and backgrounds.”

Rabbi Mirvis told young guests that “as the next generation you carry the responsibility to shape a future of compassion & understanding”.
