Chief Rabbi to attend COP28 global climate change conference in United Arab Emirates
Ephraim Mirvis has been invited to speak at the first faith pavilion of its kind in Dubai in November
The UK’s Chief Rabbi has been invited to this year’s United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
Ephraim Mirvis will join global politicians and faith leaders at the event which runs from November 30th to December 12th. He has been asked to make a speech inside the faith pavilion, the first of its kind at the conference.
The inaugural tent is notable as the Chief Rabbi told Jewish News that at the previous 2021 event in Glasgow, he was “saddened to discover that faith leaders played so little part in the global call for action on climate change, despite the fact that over 80% of the world’s population identify with a religious tradition.”
He adds that the COP28 provision of a faith pavilion “will better harness the catalysing impact that influential faith leaders can have on the climate crisis, and enhance efforts within and across faith traditions. In time, I hope this will lead to meaningful change in the attitudes of more people to Climate Action around the world.”
Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Isaac Herzog have also been invited.
Established in 1995, COP28 is the 28th Conference of the Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change
