India’s outgoing High Commissioner to the UK was honoured at a special Commonwealth Jewish Council in London this week.

The Council, relaunched this year by chair Lord Mendelsohn, hosted Monday’s event at the Athenaeum Hotel as a tribute to His Excellency Ranjan Mathai’s two years of service.

The High Commissioner, who previously served as India’s ambassador in Tel Aviv, was hailed as a “source of inspiration” by Council director Clive Lawton.

He told attendees – who included leading figures from the UK’s thriving Indian Jewish community – that the High Commission would remain committed to building strong links with the Indian Jewish diaspora in Britain.

His Excellency was hailed as an “outstanding exemplar of Commonwealth values” by Lord Mendelsohn.

The Labour peer added: “India is one of the only countries in the world with a centuries-old tradition of combatting antisemitism and embracing its Jewish community.

“It is our hope that his leadership and support for the Jewish community will inspire others.”
