Communities minister welcomes launch of Sadaqa Day

Communities minister Lord Tariq Ahmad welcomed the launch of Sadaqa Day, which has its inaugural day of Muslim-led social action on Sunday 22 March.

Inspired by Mitzvah Day, Sadaqa Day will see Muslim-led social action through charity and volunteering to make a positive contribution to their communities.

Sadaqa Day was launch at Southwark cathedral, with Lord Ahmad telling guests: “People of all faiths have a strong history of positive contribution to life in Britain.”

“There is no better way to break down barriers and form friendships than by mucking in and working hard on a shared interest. I’d urge everyone in the community to roll up their sleeves and get involved in practical positive social action”

Events have already been planned in Bradford Leeds, London and Manchester amongst other locations around the UK, and include donating to food banks, visiting care homes and homeless shelters, through community organisations like places of worship and schools.

The project will be led by British Muslim communities, but seeks to build on interfaith charity initiatives such as the big Iftar, Mitzvah Day and Hindu inspired national Sewa day.

The event was held on 17 March and was attended by Rabbi Natan Levy, Interfaith Co-ordinator at the Board, Laura Marks who is the Founder of Mitzvah Day, Julie Siddiqi – Founder, Sadaqa Day and Right Revd Bishop Christopher Chessun.
