Joint Simchat Torah celebration!
Rabbi Richard Jacobi led a joint service for Woodford Liberal Synagogue and Bet Tikvah Progressive Synagogue as they celebrated Simchat Torah. Jonny Hurst and John Morrison, Alice Wilcock and Lina Fajerman were chatanim (groom) and kallot (bride) of the Torah. Bob Kamall, Woodford Liberal’s joint vice-chair said: “We have had a wonderful evening sharing this special occasion with our friends from Bet Tikva.”
JNF UK invites 70 golfers to tee!
JNF UK’s annual Golf Days concluded with a final tournament at the Potters Bar Golf Club in Hertfordshire. More than 70 golfers competed in a variety of individual and team competitions, with trophies awarded at a buffet lunch immediately following the competition. Money raised at this year’s competitions will benefit the Yerucham Early Childhood Centre, a JNF UK funded facility caring for children in one of Israel’s poorest communities.
Art unites Jewish Care members
Deputy Mayor of Barnet, councillor Alison Cornelius, enjoyed a visit to Jewish Care’s Maurice and Vivienne Wohl Campus to see the culmination of a recent creative arts programme, creativity: revealed. Run by arts charity Create, participants from Jewish Care’s Michael Sobell Community Centre in Golders Green and residents of Jewish Care’s Selig Court, Otto Schiff and Rela Goldhill Lodge, were joined by staff, volunteers, friends and family for an energetic dance performance. Simon Morris, chief executive of Jewish Care said: “Art is a tremendous way of connecting with people and many of our members and residents have been moved to take part in this fantastic project.”
Tube travellers raise £1,5oo
Two students who visited all 270 Underground stations in one day have raised more than £1,500 for children’s charity Camp Simcha. Daniel Sasson, 18, and Aaron Rudolph, 19, began their journey just after 5am, and ended up at Heathrow Terminal 18 hours, 17 minutes and 50 seconds later – beating their previous record by almost an hour. Norwood volunteer call!
NORWOOD HAS launched a campaign to find more volunteers for its seven shops across north-west London. The charity relies on its team of retail assistants, who together give more than 32,000 hours of their time each year. Clare Leahy, volunteering development officer at Norwood, said: “Our shops bring in over £200,000 a year, but we’d like to raise more. Director of fundraising and marketing for Jewish Care, Daniel Carmel-Brown, joined seven other runners who took part in the 10km Run to the Beat at Wembley Stadium, raising £4,000 for the charity.
Pupils from North West Jewish Day School celebrated the Queen becoming the longest-serving monarch by decorating their hall with Union Jack flags and bunting. There was also a display of Royal memorabilia, including souvenirs from Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee.
More than 500 parents and children joined Jewish education charity Seed for Pizza in the Hut over Succot. The annual event, part of the Wohl Family Education Programme, brought fun and hot pizza to Immanuel College, Michael Sobell Sinai, Wolfson Hillel, Rosh Pinah and Etz Chaim.
Students from Hasmonean Boys’ school got into the Shabbat UK spirit during their Jewish studies class.
