Community reports no coronavirus-related deaths for a month

No Jewish coronavirus deaths have been reported over a one month period for the first time since March 2020.

Latest figures released by the Board of Deputies reveals zero funerals where the deceased had contracted the virus since the end of April.

This comes after the Board began collating mortality statistics at the beginning of the pandemic, with seven of the community’s largest burial boards, and local groups.

As of 14 May, 903 coronavirus-related funerals have taken place in the community.

Welcoming the drop off in deaths, Board of Deputies President Marie van der Zyl said: “After the terrible toll that coronavirus has wrought on our community, it is welcome news that a month has passed since the last Jewish death was recorded.

“My heart goes out to everyone who has lost a loved one during the course of this awful pandemic. Importantly, our gladness at the improving outlook should not result in complacency. I urge everyone to keep following all the regulations and to take up the offer of both vaccinations when invited to do so.”
