Community urged to leave legacy gift to charity during awareness month

A Jewish organisation has urged the community to leave a gift to the charity of their choice in their will during Jewish Legacy Awareness Month.

An annual campaign shining a spotlight on legacy giving returns to the UK over November, with several synagogue movements expected to take part.

The charity Jewish Legacy will promote the giving method across shuls, newsletters and sermons, working together with United Synagogue, Liberal, and the S&P Sephardi Community.

Jewish Legacy will also be giving away free themed calendars in Jewish businesses and synagogues.

The organisation, which represents 43 Jewish charities, appealed to the community to consider this form of giving.

“Leaving money to charity does not have to be at the detriment of your family and friends, who, of course, are and should be your priority,” the charity said.

“However, after thinking of them, any amount left to a Jewish Charity will help the future of our community immeasurably,” it added.

The appeal comes after figures published this week by charitable legacies analyst Legacy Foresight predict donations from legacies will skyrocket over the next three decades.

The report forecasts that legacy giving and in-memory donations to charities in the UK will double over the next two decades, reaching £10bn by 2045.
