Community leaders have welcomed the confirmation of Mark Regev as the next Israeli ambassador to the UK.

The Israeli prime minister’s spokesman for the past eight years will take over from Daniel Taub this autumn.

Before joining the prime minister’s office in 2007, he spent three years as foreign ministry spokesman. He has also served at the Israeli embassies in Beijing and Washington.

Board of Deputies President Jonathan Arkush tweeted: “The Board on behalf of the Jewish community will give Mark Regev the warmest welcome and wish him every success.”

Arieh Miller, Zionist Federation Director, said: “The departure of Daniel Taub left a very big pair of shoes to fill. However, in the run-up to the 100th anniversary of the Balfour Declaration, the Israeli government has once again shown how highly it prizes the special relationship between our two countries.

“As spokesperson for the Prime Minister of Israel, Mark Regev has time and time again made the case for Israel, often in the most trying of situations.  We look forward to working closely with this new Ambassador.”

He was a regular feature on British TV screens during recent conflicts, putting Israel’s case on programmes including Newsnight.
