A Hitler-admirer who said the Pittsburgh attack “serves them right” has been under investigation by Essex Police for 18 months, according to antisemitism campaigners.

The white supremacist was initially reported by Campaign Against Antisemitism for posts made on alternative social media platform Gab, in which they allegedly said: “I propose when we get the chance we exterminate the Jews by gassing”

Elsewhere, they reportedly wrote: “I tell everyone I meet I’m a Nazi and want to kill the Jews off completely and change us back to a proper white country.”

News that the force was still investigating 18 months later was revealed by LBC Radio on Wednesday, and will anger Jewish community representatives arguing that the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has been slow to prosecute.

The CPS said: “We work closely with the police to bring cases to court. We can only consider charging someone once a file of evidence has been referred to us by the police. We will always prosecute instances of antisemitic hate speech where there is enough evidence to secure a conviction and it is in the public interest.”
