Craig Leviton appointed new chair of Holocaust Educational Trust

A new chair has been appointed to the Holocaust Educational Trust, one of Britain’s most prominent charities to provide teaching and activism on issues relating to the Shoah.

The organisation has announced public affairs executive Craig Leviton will take over from Paul Phillips, who is stepping down after ten years in the role.

“I am honoured to be appointed as Chair of the Holocaust Educational Trust and to follow in the footsteps of Paul’s superb leadership as Chair,” Leviton said this week.

“We move to a point where the Holocaust becomes solely history. We will do all we can to ensure that everyone, everywhere knows of the horrors of the Holocaust and the brave and brilliant survivors who made this country their home.”

Phillips’s time as chair saw the HET expand to a stage where it could secure funding for many programmes including Belsen 75, in which nearly 1,000 sixth form students taken to see the site of Bergen-Belsen for themselves.

He was awarded an OBE for his services to Holocaust education last year.

Phillips said in a statement: “I am proud of all we have achieved at the Holocaust Educational Trust over the past decade. It has been an honour to work with the inspiring Holocaust survivors and to see young people from all walks of life benefit from the Trust’s vital work.

“As we position the Trust for a time when the Holocaust moves from living memory to history, it is time for the next generation to ensure that the Trust continues to carry out its crucial mission of Holocaust education and remembrance.

“I have no doubt the Trust will go from strength to strength under Craig’s leadership, together with the dedicated board of trustees and excellent team of staff.”
