Cruise line that took immigrants from Europe to the US launches 11th ship

It's almost 150 years since Holland America first sailed

It was quite possibly the most moving and magnificent christening ceremony in the history of the high seas as MS Rotterdam was unveiled in, appropriately enough, Rotterdam.

The launch of Holland America’s flagship cruise liner was worthy of an Oscars ceremony as the company proudly showed off its 11th ship. And there was plenty to crow about.

The Dutch Royal family have a close affinity to this company, which next year marks its 150th anniversary. Her Royal Highness Princess Margriet of the Netherlands officially named the new vessel and will be her godmother.

Various folk connected with Holland America gave fantastic speeches in the ship’s glorious new main theatre. And you probably would not have guessed who stole the show – it was a long-serving tailor who has cruised the world with them plying his trade. This gentle chap from the Philippines spoke of his loyalty and love for this cruise line, and how he followed in his father’s footsteps and joined the ‘family” of Holland America as a young man. It was really quite moving. The tailor, surprisingly, was the perfect fit for a christening!

This cruise line continues to flourish a century-plus after helping to transport millions of people from, you guessed it, Holland to America to begin a new life. Even then the welfare of passengers was second to none. A huge ‘hotel’ was built to provide special accommodation in Rotterdam for those waiting to embark on their journey after sometimes having to hang around for weeks. Facilities included a kosher kitchen.

The new Rotterdam is the seventh ship of this name. To build a new vessel during the pandemic took extra skill and, indeed, patience but the result is stunning. It is grandeur all the way and, in keeping with the rest of the fleet, a splendid array of artwork is displayed throughout. My favourite venue was the Grand Dutch Cafe on Deck 3. This classy bar and cafe allows guests to enjoy a specialty coffee and choose from a delicious range of cakes and pastries. It is all Dutch inspired, of course.

MS Rotterdam is the line’s third Pinnacle-class cruise ship, meaning luxury abound. The main dining room is beautiful, the selection of entertainment on board is varied, high quality and unique… for example, direct from Beale Street in Memphis, B.B. King’s All-Star Band delivers classic soul and rock & roll to get you dancing. For a complete contrast, Lincoln Center Stage delights with live classical performances.

Nearby in Rotterdam’s port sits the former Holland America liner and cruise ship Rotterdam, which is now a floating hotel and museum. I paid a visit and this gem leaves you with a great sense of nostalgia. She was launched back in 1959 and was the ship of the day… but the latest Rotterdam is the one to experience now.
