Daughter of renowned sculptor Frank Meisler vows to continue his work
Designer of Kindertransport memorial at Liverpool Street Station died in 2018, and now his daughter Marit looks to the challenge of bringing 'a young, new vision' to his legacy
The daughter of the world-renowned Israeli architect and sculptor Frank Meisler has said she plans to continue his work following his death in 2018.
Meisler was born in Danzig but grew up in England before moving to Israel in 1956. Fifty years later, he designed and built the Kindertransport monument at Liverpool Street Station in London, where he arrived as a 13-year old child refugee in August 1939.
He later built similar memorials in cities around the world including Berlin, Hamburg, Rotterdam, Kyiv, and Gdansk, while his Judaica art was presented to Prince Charles, Bill Clinton, Margaret Thatcher and other world leaders.
He opened a gallery in the winding alleys of Jaffa’s historic seaside artist quarter, and this continues to sell his designs of Jewish figures and artifacts such as mezuzahs and candlesticks.
Speaking to Jewish News, Marit Meisler said: “It’s a big change and a bold decision to continue his brand and art. My father’s legacy and accomplishments are well-known. I plan to continue his legacy while bringing a young, new vision to it.”
She said this would be in the form of using new technology and new designs, as she recalled her father’s “long relationship” with the UK, where he studied at Harrow, served in the Royal Air Force and helped design Heathrow Airport.
