Buckingham Palace visit for teen diabetes fundraiser

A 13-year-old JFS student is off to Buckingham Palace today after raising thousands of pounds for diabetes research.
Since a virus destroyed his pancreas at the age of five, Sammy Novick has had Type 1 diabetes and needs insulin injections to “live a normal life”.
He raised a staggering £6,500 for JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) and Type 1 Diabetes Research on a sponsored walk and will now attend the Royal reception ahead of World Diabetes Day on Friday, one of only five people invited for their fundraising efforts.
The event, which will see the unveiling of a quilt created by girl guides which has raised a further £2,500 for JDRF, comes one month after groundbreaking work at Harvard University, where scientists succeeded for the first time in creating billions of insulin-producing beta cells from stem cells to help counter the condition.
Sammy’s Royal summons comes after a difficult year. He said: “Every few weeks I was feeling really poorly and felt dreadful inside from having bad scores from my blood sugar with no reason. I can’t get rid of my disease yet, but with everyone’s help perhaps one day I can.”
