Diego Schwartzman dumped out of US Open

Diego Schwartzman’s US Open is over for another year after he was beaten in four sets by Japan’s Kei Nishikori.

Looking to reach the fourth round of the competition for only the second time in his career, the 26-year-old, ranked 13 in the world, went into the match as slight favourite against the 2014 runner-up, but Saturday night’s encounter ultimately proved to a step too far.

Schwartzman started the brighter of the two and found himself 3-0 up in the first set, only to loose six of the next seven games. Broken at 4-4 in the second set, Nishikori needed no second invitation to double his advantage, but the Argentine would get back into the match, winning the third set, having spurned another early 3-0 lead, but breaking at 5-6 to serve out.

That didn’t though shift the momentum, and Nishikori claimed the match in the most one-sided set of the match, breaking on no fewer than three occasions to secure the win and keep up his 100 percent winning record against Schwartzman.

His loss brought to an end Jewish interest in New York, following defeats earlier in the week to Camila Giorgi, Julia Glushko and Noah Rubin in the singles, while Jonathan Erlich suffered a first round exit in the men’s doubles competition.
