Drug addict to face jail for killing 100-year-old Nazi camp survivor

A drug addict who killed a frail 100-year-old Nazi prison camp survivor for £20 worth of heroin is set to be given a “lengthy prison” sentence.

Artur Waszkiewicz attacked Polish-born widow Zofija Kaczan from behind – knocking her to the floor, taking her handbag and leaving her to bleed in the road as she made her way to church on May 28 last year.

The centenarian, who was not Jewish, had been sentenced to death on her birthday by the Nazis during the war, suffered multiple injuries in the robbery, including a fractured neck and cheekbone.

She died from pneumonia in hospital on June 6 – a condition brought on by the injuries she sustained in the attack close to the junction of St Chads Road and Empress Road in Normanton, Derby.

Waszkiewicz was eventually arrested despite drastically altering his appearance and changing the insurance details on his car which was seen on CCTV slowing down as he came across a “small, vulnerable… easy target”.

The 40-year-old had been unanimously convicted by a jury of manslaughter and robbery on Wednesday after the prosecution suggested his fingerprint on a receipt in the handbag was one of the most damning pieces of evidence.

Waszkiewicz, of Hilary Road in Shepherd’s Bush, west London, will be sentenced at Derby Crown Court on Thursday.
