EastEnders actor Danny Dyer reveals the story behind his unlikely friendship with Jewish playwright Harold Pinter in an eye-opening documentary on Sky Arts next week.

Embarking on a deeply personal journey, Dyer sets out to discover why, at 22, he was taken under the wing of Pinter, the making of him as a man – and a stage actor. He relives the audition where they met and divulges that he relaxed because he had no idea who the great man was.

Dyer had grown up on the big screen in splashy, trashy films, but had never set foot on a stage or had an acting lesson. Pinter saw a talent the boy himself was unaware of. Twenty years on, the need to know more about his friend takes Dyer back to Cold War Britain to discover the source of the darkness in Pinter’s plays.

  • Danny Dyer on Harold Pinter airs on Tuesday, 22 September, 9pm on Sky Arts
