Edgwarebury becomes first Jewish cemetery in the UK to achieve the Green Flag Award
Grounds recognised for meeting international benchmark for parks and green spaces
Edgwarebury Cemetery has been awarded Green Flag status for 2026/27, on its first application for the internationally recognised quality mark for parks and green spaces.
The accreditation is only awarded to sites that meet the highest standards of management, environmental sustainability, visitor experience, and overall quality.
Managed by the Edgwarebury Joint Burial Board (EJBB) on behalf of the S&P Sephardi Community, the West London Synagogue, Liberal Judaism and Belsize Square Synagogue, the cemetery was established in 1972, with the first burial on 14 December 1975 in the West London Synagogue section.
Cemetery director Lester Harris said: “This is a truly outstanding achievement and a landmark moment in the cemetery’s history. It is a testament to the dedication, professionalism and pride shown every day by our exceptional team. Their hard work, care and commitment have transformed the cemetery and created an environment that is not only beautifully maintained, but also provides a peaceful, respectful and welcoming space.”
Edgwarebury Cemetery is one of 2,391 UK sites to earn the award in 2026.
