Erlich through to second round at US Open
Israeli wins opening match in the doubles competition at Flushing Meadows.
Jonathan Erlich became the first Israeli to win a match at this year’s US Open on Wednesday night, as he booked his place in the second round of the men’s doubles competition.
Teaming up with Mexican Santiago Gonzalez, they beat Argentine duo Guillermo Duran and Maximo Gonzalez 6-1, 6-3, but face a daunting task in the next round – taking on the number three seeds, American brothers Bob and Mike Bryan.
However, American Noah Rubin failed to join him the next round after the teenager and his compatriot Daniel Nguyen were beaten 6-3, 6-3 by GB’s Daniel Evans and Australian Nick Kyrgios.
Thursday will see Dudi Sela try to join Erlich in the second round when he and Frenchman Stephane Robert take on German Andre Begermann and India’s Leander Paes,they are fourth on Court 11.
Rubin begins his mixed doubles tournament, where alongside Jamie Loeb, they face Canadian Gabriela Dabrowski and India’s Rohan Bopanna, they’re due fifth on Court 9.
However, first up on that court, sees American Scott Lipsky play his men’s doubles first round match. Playing alongside compatriot Eric Butorac, they take on the tournament’s seventh seeds, South African Raven Klaasen and American Rajeev Ram.
Over on Court 4, Argentine Diego Schwartzman begins his men’s doubles campaign, him and fellow Argentine Andres Molteni taking on Russian duo Andrey Kuznetsov and Mikhail Youzhny.
