Falling tree kills counsellor at US Jewish summer camp

Annais Rittenberg, a camp counsellor at the Northern California Jewish summer camp Camp Tawonga, has been killed by a falling tree.

It was confirmed yesterday that the collapsed tree had injured a further four staff members at the camp, but that none of the children attending Camp Tawonga had been hurt in the incident.

Executive director Ken Kramarz commended the quick response of the emergency services and other members of staff, releasing a statement on the incident. “At 8:25 AM this morning, a tree spontaneously fell on the campfire circle outside the Dining Hall at Camp Tawonga, all our campers were inside the Dining Hall when the tree fell and none were hurt.”

Camp Tawonga was founded in 1925 and maintains it’s headquarters in San Francisco. The camp itself is located near Yosemite National Park.
