Five-a-side fun, puns and trophies at the 2014 JUEFA cup!

Sunday saw Jewish students from Scotland to Sheffield and Manchester to Middlesex come together to take part in the biggest Jewish student five-a-side football tournament this side of Israel: the 2014 JUEFA Cup!

A total of 31 teams took part in competing for the coveted JUEFA trophy, jointly sponsored by UJS, MASA and Maccabi GB, for both the Men’s and Women’s brackets, with the tournament boasting a record number of women’s teams on the pitch.

Nottingham J-Soc‘s team beat Mesut Lowy to bring home the Men’s Trophy and making a strong challenge in the pun stakes with an inspired team name of ‘Breaking Chabad’.

Team captain Jacob Finestein was delighted, saying ‘the standard was excellent and it took a lot for us to come out on top. We look forward to retaining the title next year’.

Meanwhile UJS Women’s Team took the women’s trophy, beating out Scotland J Soc United in the final.

Both sets of trophy winners received free flights to Europe and will be jetting off to a destination of their choice soon.

Teams that failed to make it through the group stage got a chance at redemption with the Plate Tournament, fighting for the prize of a paintballing session for their team. Sheffield J-Soc won the Women’s Plate Trophy while Leeds United (made up of students from a couple of J-Socs) won the Men’s.

Event Organiser and MASA Rep for UJS Matt Keston, was “extremely happy with how the day went’ and ‘thrilled that we had 31 teams from across the country take part and everyone had a great day out”.

UJS President Joe Tarsh commented “I played better than I imagined too which was great! I even scored the winning goal of the UJS teams first ever win!”

Well done Mr Tarsh!

Joe continued by praising the students who came along to play, noting how great it was ‘to see so many students travel from far and wide to JUEFA’.
