Football and futsal dominate Friday at the Maccabiah

The U18’s were second best to Israel in their semi-final on Friday morning

Friday saw semi-finals involving Team GB in both the football and futsal, while there were important games played in the cricket and netball competitions…

*FOOTBALL:

U18 Semi-final:
Israel 7 Team GB 0
Joel Nathan saw his side’s fine competition come to a shuddering halt as they were simply outclassed by a superior Israeli side.

The hosts, who fielded numerous youth team players from professional Israeli football clubs were simply a class apart and having struck the woodwork twice early on, further upped the gears to go into the break leading 4-0.

Not as prolific in the second half, they did though score again to eventually win 7-0. Team GB will though now compete for bronze on Sunday.

U16 Semi Final:
Team GB 3 USA 2
GB’s junior team made history on Friday morning as thet became the first U16 side to reach the Maccabiah final.

Falling behind early on, GB equalised within minutes when Jake Norton headed home Adam Ellis’ cross at the far post. The US then went back in front, before an own goal levelled it up at 2-2 before the break.

A closely-contested match, Gb took the lead for the first time when Ellis was pulled over in the box, Dominic Feldman stepped up to cooly convert from the spot kick.

Masters 35+ Group stage:
Team GB 0 Argentina 3
Team GB were comfortably beaten, but they can still win a medal as they’ll competer for bronze.

*FUTSAL:

U16 semi-final:
Team GB 2 Argentina 1
Goals from Danny Stapleton and Sam Belchak saw Team GB win a feisty encounter in Netanya as they booked a place in Sunday’s final. Manager Laurence Myers said: “To get to the final is unbelievable – and more than we ever dreamt of. We got a team of football boys together and tried to play futsal.”

Open quarter-final:
Team GB 0 Argentina 5
Team GB’s hopes of picking up a medal were ruthlessly ended as the Argentines inflicted a second defeat over them.

*BASKETBALL:

Junior: 5-8th place
Team GB 54 Germany 57
Team GB were denied a victory over the Germans in a thrilling encounter. Rafi Saipe once more top-scored for the team, claiming 27 points, with Jo Curtis scoring 12.

Joshua Paris beat Ram Kapach 6-2, 6-2 (qualifies for main draw final)
Rebecca Smaller was beaten 6-3, 6-2 by Katya Krivoshapov, qualifies for bronze medal match

Mixed doubles semi-final:
Richard Moss & Jacqui Boyd beat Dor Belfer & Anna Berlin 6-3, 7-6
