Former Labour regional director resigns from party over ‘bullying’ claims
Sheila Murphy steps aside from the opposition after 49 years, leaving behind career in the party behind which saw her work with Luciana Berger and Ed Miliband

A former regional director for the Labour Party and aide to Luciana Berger MP has resigned her membership, accusing members of her local constituency of bullying.
Sheila Murphy, a Wirral councillor and Labour member for 49 years, was a former director for Labour north-west and worked on the leadership campaigns of Ed Miliband and Yvette Cooper.
Her decision to leave follows her backing for the unsuccessful Labour candidate in Wirral, Philip Brightmore, in this month’s local elections.
Last year she said she was “hanging onto membership by my fingertips,” adding: “We have a new hard core whose behaviour is nasty, vicious, and controlling. It’s a return to the factionalism of the 1980s. And we all know how that worked out.”
