Fritz falls short in junior boys’ semi-final

American Taylor Fritz has failed in his bid to reach the final of the junior boys’ singles tournament at Wimbledon.

The number one seed was up against compatriot Reilly Opelka, though lost his semi-final in straight sets on Friday afternoon.

Having not dropped a set in his opening three matches, he just about overcame his quarter-final clash on Thursday, though this seemed to be a match too far.

Losing the first set 6-3, the second set went to a tiebreak, which Opelka won 15-13, finally converting his sixth match point.

Fritz did though enjoy a win later on Friday when he and American Michael Mmoh booked their place in the semi-finals of the boy’s doubles competition, the number one seeds, beating France’s Geoffrey Blancaneaux and Tunisian Aziz Dougaz 6-2, 3-6, 6-3. They next take on Opelka and Japan’s Akira Santillan for a place in the final.
