Belmont beat Yarl CC by 5 wickets

A clinical performance from Daniel Frumar helped Belmont & Edgware CC earn a third consecutive win on Sunday.

Belmont & Edgware win by 5 wickets

BECC were able to field a strong team against Yarl CC as they welcomed back Shaun Hart and Gideon Restan for the first time since 2011. With multiple bowling options, stand-in skipper Elliott Mayer was not overly disappointed when he lost the toss and was asked to field.

Joe Saleh opened up running down the hill and immediately caused Yarl’s batsmen problems with his pace and accuracy. With fellow left-armer Ben Tilley bowling tidily from other end, Belmont were soon rewarded with a wicket in Saleh’s second over, when he bowled their number 1 for just 1 run.

Despite this start, Yarl took advantage of a good batting track and reached a steady 67-1 after 12 overs. A number of bowling changes saw BECC tighten things up again as Shaun Hart showed the club what they had been missing with a controlled spell. Meanwhile, Greg Mayer enjoying both the pressure generated from the other end and the extra pace and bounce he was getting from bowling down the slope, struck 3 times in his 7 overs to restrict Yarl’s run rate. Gideon Restan, belying his absence, looked sharp and picked up a wicket and Tom Hart contributed towards the end of the innings as he claimed 2 scalps in consecutive balls. All in all, a solid bowling performance with regular wickets falling meant that BECC were set a target of 175.

A busy opening partnership by Elliott and Phil Mayer got BECC off to a flyer, as they used the pace of the Yarl opening bowlers to find the fence regularly and pressured the fielders by running hard and rotating the strike. They put on 46 in 8 overs before Elliott cut a wide ball straight to backward point when he was on 21. This brought no. 3, Dan Frumar, to the crease who was able to build on the platform that the Mayers had set. He played fluently to keep BECC up with the run rate throughout. Mayer and Frumar put on 69 before Mayer was bowled for a very good 40. Frumar was then supported, first by Tom Hart and then by Shaun Hart as BECC sauntered towards the finishing line. Although Frumar was out lbw for 60, with two required, Shaun finished the game off in style the next over with a lovely straight drive for 4 as Belmont claimed a comfortable victory by 5 wickets. This is now the eighth win of what is increasingly becoming a very successful season.
