Furman confident South Africa can reach quarter-finals

Dean Furman is confident South Africa can still qualify for the quarter-finals of the African Cup of Nations

Dean Furman believes South Africa can still reach the quarter-finals of the African Nations Cup, despite seeing them held to a 1-1 draw by Senegal on Friday night.

That point, coupled with their opening game loss against Algeria, means they will have to beat Avram Grant’s Ghana side in their final group game on Tuesday, otherwise will face an early exit from the competition.

As with their opening game, Bafana Bafana took the lead, this time through Oupa Manyisa just 62 seconds into the second half. However, a towering header from Kara Mbodji ensured the sides left with a point each.

Furman, talking of his side’s chances of progressing in the tournament, said: Of course we have a chance. We’ll believe we have (a chance) just until that final whistle goes, until we look at the table and know where we are.

“That’s how we approached this tournament from the start and we’ll do this until the final whistle goes. We goback to the hotel, are going to recover and then we we’re going to prepare for an important game for us and we believe we can go through from this group.”
