Furman targets African Cup of Nations win

Dean Furman says South Africa are aiming to win the African Cup of Nations, which begins at the weekend.

The Doncaster Rovers midfielder, who is set to captain the Bafana Bafana, was speaking as the squad flew out to Equatorial Guinea.

He said: “We’re going to Equatorial Guinea to fight, we will make our nation proud and we will make our families proud.

“We are very much looking forward to the tournament and have got great belief within our ranks. We’ve got some top players and are very excited to go and showcase that at the tournament.

“We will make the country pride and we hope to come back as winners.”

Furman doesn’t have the fondest memories of the competition, two years ago he missed the first penalty in their quarter-final penalty shoot-out defeat by Mali, though says the character in this year’s team is extremely strong.

The team have this year been drawn in Group C against Algeria, Senegal and Avram Grant’s Ghana side, and begin their campaign on Monday against the Algerians.
