Gal Gadot speaks out against US child separation policy
Israeli Wonder Woman star, along with other Jewish celebrities, express their concerns over Donald Trump's immigration laws
Israeli actress Gal Gadot, along with other Jewish starts, have voiced their anger over the US’ policy of separating children from their parents once they arrive at the border.
Taking to Instagram on Saturday, the Wonder Woman star wrote: “This picture breaks my heart… Can you imagine how this little girl feels? How scared she is..?” Everything is wrong with this picture.. #childrenbelongwiththeirparents.”
The message came in the aftermath of protests held across the US, which drew tens of thousands of people, who want to see the Trump administration end certain immigration policies.
The White House had set up a “zero tolerance” policy of splitting up children and migrant parents who arrived together at the Mexico-US border, before Trump announced the US would stop the practice, meaning more than 2,000 children remain separated from their families.
Gadot also shared a post written by Patty Jenkins, who is currently directing her in the sequel to Wonder Woman, on her twitter account, which said: “Trying to make our film today, but Gal and I growing increasingly distracted by the fact that there is somehow not an aggressive and swift effort to reunite these kids with their parents,” Jenkins wrote. “What kind of people are standing in the way of such a thing? #Childrenbelongwiththeirparents.”
Gadot wasn’t the only Jewish celebrities to express their concern. Israeli-American actress Natalie Portman, on her Instagram account, wrote: “We need more than one judge’s order to end this crisis – we need action by this Administration and this Congress to reunify all children with their families as quickly as possible and end the policy of dehumanizing families who are only seeking safety out of fear for their lives.”
Amy Schumer took part in a march in New York on Saturday – posing a photo of herself wearing a T-shirt reading “joyful warrior.”
She had earlier posted on her Instagram: “All families want what’s best for their children, we won’t let @realdonaldTrump demonize immigrant families for sacrificing everything to keep their children safe. Stand up to say #familiesbelongtogether.”
Sarah Silverman, a long-term critic of the Trump White House, said: “The difference between humans and animals used to be that humans possess reason, now it’s that animals have an instinct to take care of abandoned babies that are not their own, and humans do not.”
