GIFT: Helping those less fortunate to celebrate Chanukah

Chanukah is officially upon us and GIFT (Give It Forward Today) have made sure that this Chanukah can be enjoyed by everyone.

GIFT’s objective is to teach young people to GIVE and also to help those in need. The charity “inspires and educates young people to become GIVERS and facilitates volunteering and the innovation of projects, helping those in need across the community”.

Chanukah, after all, is the festival of light and Michelle Barnett, GIFT Director, said: “What is beautiful and unique about the Chanukah lights, is that when a flame is shared, nothing is lost, the light expands to others. Through volunteering, GIFT facilitates and inspires people to share their own ‘light’ and their own qualities and skills with others to bring more light into the world”.

This year, GIFT London, Manchester & Israel are making sure that those less fortunate can have a special Chanukah and don’t have to miss out on the celebrations by giving over 1000 new presents to local children in need which has all been donated by children through the ‘GIFT It Forward’ School Initiative and the Toy Appeal, which is in partnership with Camp Simcha.

GIFT UK are also giving out hundreds of winter warming packages including new donated hats and scarves and Chanukah packages including menorahs, candles, dreidels and oil to local families in need.

The charity, additionally, will be bringing Jewish Care residents into schools to make Chanukah decorations and collages for old age homes and snowflake decorations for hospitals.

Volunteers will also be decorating and filling doughnuts with jam to give out to GIFT families and in partnership with Light a Life and teenage volunteers will be baking biscuits, making latkes and meals to go to those in need.

GIFT Israel are assisting this Chanukah, by packing food parcels for those in need in conjunction with Yad Eliezer and providing new winter sweaters for all the children in the Sanhedria Children’s Home.
